God Sent Someone To My Side of Town
Sometimes the person you came to rescue is the one God sent to rescue you.
by Gary Paul Gates
Pastor Max Oliver has spent nearly forty years showing up for everyone else. He has prayed beside hospital beds, buried the brokenhearted, counseled troubled families, and preached hope from a pulpit surrounded by increasingly empty pews. But beneath his faithful smile, Max is exhausted, discouraged, and quietly losing his own will to live.
Convinced his ministry no longer matters, Max begins walking the streets of East Riverton—a neighborhood scarred by addiction, poverty, prostitution, and gang violence. He tells himself he is going where others are afraid to go so he can reach people for Jesus. The truth is far more troubling: Max is searching for a place where his life might finally end while doing something that looks like faith.
Instead, he meets Marcus, a hardened man carrying wounds of his own; Sarah, a young woman who has nearly surrendered to her past; and Victor King, a feared gang leader who believes no one ever truly changes.
As their lives collide, an unlikely family begins to form, a dying church discovers its purpose, and a weary pastor realizes that the people he came to rescue may be the very ones God sent to rescue him.
God Sent Someone to My Side of Town is a moving Christian novel about burnout, depression, redemption, second chances, and the life-changing power of showing up. It is a reminder that no neighborhood is beyond the reach of grace, no life is too broken for God to restore, and no faithful act of love is ever wasted.
