Christian novel explores pastoral burnout, unexpected friendships, and the restoring power of grace

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Author Gary Paul Gates announces the release of God Sent Someone to My Side of Town: Sometimes the person you came to rescue is the one God sent to rescue you, a Christian novel about a weary pastor whose journey into a struggling neighborhood becomes an unexpected path toward healing.

The book is available now on Amazon.com in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle eBook editions.

For nearly forty years, Pastor Max Oliver has answered the call to care for others. He has prayed beside hospital beds, comforted grieving families, and preached hope while watching the pews around him grow increasingly empty. Beneath his faithful smile, however, Max is battling exhaustion, discouragement, and a deepening depression.

Believing his ministry no longer matters, Max begins walking the streets of East Riverton, a neighborhood marked by addiction, poverty, prostitution, and gang violence. He tells himself he is taking the gospel where others are afraid to go. Privately, his mission conceals a dangerous despair: he has begun putting himself in harm’s way with little concern for whether he survives.

But the people he encounters interrupt the ending he has imagined.

Among them are Marcus, a hardened man carrying wounds of his own; Sarah, a young woman struggling to move beyond her past; and Victor King, a feared gang leader convinced that people never truly change. As their lives intersect, unexpected friendships take root, an unlikely family begins to form, and a declining congregation discovers a renewed sense of purpose.

Through Max’s story, Gates explores the emotional burdens that can remain hidden behind a life of service. The novel addresses pastoral burnout, depression, and suicidal despair while tracing a story of connection, redemption, and renewed hope.

At its heart, God Sent Someone to My Side of Town asks readers to consider how God may work through the very people they least expect. Max enters East Riverton believing its residents need what he can offer. What unfolds challenges his understanding of ministry, belonging, and his own need for help.

Written for readers of Christian fiction, the novel offers a compassionate look at second chances and the power of showing up for one another. Its central message is that no neighborhood is beyond the reach of grace, no life is beyond God’s restoring love, and acts of kindness can carry significance far beyond what anyone sees.

God Sent Someone to My Side of Town by Gary Paul Gates is available on Amazon.com in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle eBook formats.
